MAVIS Social Events

The MAVIS Events Committee and the Board Of Directors are always considering new social events and welcome your suggestions. Future events are listed near the top of the home page. Past events are listed below.

Our current ideas include bowling events, having a picnic, having lunches and dinners at local restaurants, conference calls for parents and teachers of blind students, learning contra and square dancing, and holding a blind orienteering course. We need your ideas too!

MAVIS get togethers are lots of fun, but can only be held if you can come. We need to hear from you!

Some of our past events:

On Saturday, January 12, 2008, 7 MAVIS members and one friend enjoyed bowling at Lanes And Games in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The strikes and spares were lots of fun.

On Saturday, July 7, 2007, 9 current and former MAVIS members and friends gathered at the Bertucci’s Ristorante in the Alewife MBTA station. In addition to enjoying the delicious Italian food, participants also got the chance to socialize with one another and enjoy the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The event was a great success.

On Saturday, August 19, 2006, 23 members of the blind community and sighted friends gathered in Chestnut Hill Park for instruction in Beep Ball, which is baseball adapted for blind and visually impaired people. Click on the following link for more on the 8-19-06 event.

Photo showing MAVIS members enjoying lunch, January 21, 2006 On Saturday, January 21, 2006, ten MAVIS members and friends enjoyed lunch at Bertucci's Ristorante in the Alewife MBTA station. We had fun socializing and eating the delicious Italian food. Thanks to Alison (sitting at lower right in the photo), who produced multiple copies of the menu in braille and large print.

On Friday, December 30, 2005, nine MAVIS members enjoyed a meal at the Bombay restaurant in Arlington paid for by MAVIS to celebrate our successes this year, and to wish everyone great achievements for the new year.

On Saturday, July 16, 2005, nine MAVIS members and guests enjoyed a hot summer business meeting at a new location, Friends Meeting at Cambridge (thanks, David, for arranging the room!) We enjoyed lunch and snacks, dancing, and a new feature, role-playing workshops. The workshops explored how to deal with sighted people who have good intentions but just "don't get it" when it comes to dealing with disabled people. We learned how to speak up and explain what ways work best for us as individuals. We all agreed that the workshops were valuable and should be continued in the future.

On Saturday, June 11, 2005, eight MAVIS members and a former member enjoyed bowling and dining at Lanes And Games in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here are some photos:

On Saturday, February 19, 2005, eight MAVIS members and a parent enjoyed bowling and dining at Lanes And Games in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

On Saturday, September 25, 2004, six MAVIS members and one parent (thanks, Bob Heaton, for the ride!) visited Old Sturbridge Village in the middle of Massachusetts. We had fun walking through this replica 1830's town and finding out how people lived back then. The food and fudge were good, too! We returned tired but happy.

A MAVIS business meeting was held Wednesday, July 14, 2004, 4 to 8 PM, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. Dinner and snacks were served. Attendence was good and everyone had fun meeting people and making new friends. Lots of business got done, including setting up a new presentation for parents of blind kids.

Just a few people showed up at bowling Jun 12, 2004, but we had a great time and played for many hours, then shared a meal at the bowling alley's restaurant.

At the end of March, 2004, MAVIS held its annual election of officers during the spring convention of the Bay State Council of the Blind. That evening, after the BSCB banquet, we entertained the crowd with a skit which you can listen to by clicking here.

On Halloween night (October 31, 2003), we had a costume party!

On Saturday, October 25, at 12:30 p.m. (well, it was more like 2:30 PM before people got there, due to an unscheduled extra fun social event at the home of a MAVIS member), we went bowling at the Lanes & Games bowling alley on Route 2 near Alewife T Station in Cambridge. Everyone had lots of fun.

On Saturday, October 18, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., we enjoyed dinner and socializing at the Ground Round Restaurant near the Alewife T Station in Cambridge.

On Saturday, August 16, we went bowling at Lanes & Games.

During the week of July 5-12, several of our members stayed in Pittsburgh for the American Council of the Blind National Convention.

On Saturday, March 29, 2003, MAVIS held its annual election of officers during the spring convention of the Bay State Council of the Blind. That evening, after the BSCB banquet, we entertained the crowd with a new twist on the standard IEP meeting: we pretended to be a BLIND parent and a group of BLIND professionals working on an IEP with the only SIGHTED student at Louis Braille High School!

On Saturday, February 8, 2003, MAVIS members met for lunch at the Ground Round near Alewife T Station in Cambridge.

On December 14, 2002, MAVIS held its holiday party, complete with a humorous "blind civil rights sing-along" (with lyrics in large print and braille for everyone, of course)!

On Sunday, November 24, 2002, we went to the Wheelock Family Theatre for an audio-described version of The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

On Saturday, October 5, 2002, we met at legendary Club Passim in Harvard Square for a concert by Valerie and Walter Crockett and the Oxymorons. The highlight of the show was a great performance by MAVIS member Emily Crockett, who was still in high school. We had such a fabulous time at the concert, we suggest you check out the Crocketts and the Oxymorons on the web!
