Welcome to the Massachusetts Alliance of Visually Impaired Students (M.A.V.I.S.)

The Massachusetts Alliance of Visually Impaired Students (MAVIS) is a non-profit organization committed to giving visually impaired students in New England a strong network of support and a powerful public voice on issues like textbook accessibility and fairness in standardized testing. We support OurMoneyToo.org, a volunteer group working to make U.S. paper money accessible by feel.

MAVIS is an affiliate of the Bay State Council Of The Blind (BSCB). BSCB is affiliated with the American Council of the Blind (ACB), the nation’s consumer organization of visually impaired people, founded in 1961.

MAVIS held its first meeting on November 4, 2000. Since that time, we have sought out blind and sighted people who care about blind civil rights, from under age 16 to over 50, from high schools, community colleges, universities, graduate schools, and beyond, and from all over New England. MAVIS members represent a wide array of interests ranging from French to music to psychology to computer science to law.

We offer a couple of weekly conference calls to help our members stay in touch and do the business of the organization. We also schedule social events where our members can meet and relax together. Our recent outings have included a dinner out, a trip to a described play, and a holiday party.

MAVIS was founded to increase educational opportunities for visually impaired students within Massachusetts.

To read about the political efforts of MAVIS so far, and to find out what we have planned for the future, visit our business page. So that we can better inform our members and other interested people about the political issues currently affecting the lives of visually impaired students in Massachusetts, we have created our political issues page. We also include a summary of disability rights laws.

A number of organizations offer scholarships for visually impaired college students. We offer a list of these on our scholarships page.

We have compiled a list of resources on the internet. Our list includes information about organizations, sports, dog guide schools, technology vendors, and much more. Note: being listed here does not necessarily imply an endorsement by the Massachusetts Alliance of Visually Impaired Students.

MAVIS offers an email list that we use to keep in touch with each other, share announcements such as new scholarships and MAVIS events, and to stay on top of issues of interest to blind and low-vision students. If you would like to subscribe to this email list, please send email by clicking this link: add me to the MAVIS mailing list. By the way, we recently left Yahoo as our mailing list because of their unresponsiveness to the concerns of the blind community in requiring the use of vision in their registration process (this is called CAPTCHA).

If you do not wish to participate in the general discussion list, but would like to receive our public announcements, please send this fact, along with your email address, to us (see "contact MAVIS" below).

Some of our members maintain Blogs and Websites that reflect their interests. You can browse them from the Members' Websites page.

Other MAVIS pages you may find useful include Assistive Technology, Games, Sports and Sports Organizations, The Bookport Cheat Sheet, Books for Leisure Reading, E-Books, Textbooks and Educational Materials, Catalogues: Gadgets and Novelties, Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts, Dog Guides, Legislative Resources, Massachusetts Resources, and Research at NIST.
